Shaving the third flo do

The door won’t close! Oh no!

Instructions

1. Determine your cut line on the door. Measure how much of the length you need to remove in order for the door to close. Mark the door at this distance from the bottom (the part of my door that is too long and prevents it from closing) on either side so that the cut line you will draw later will be straight. (If the issue was at the top of the door for some reason, you would measure and mark from the top.)

2. Remove the door. Set it on sawhorses.

3. Tape the bottom of the door (more than you plan to remove) with painter’s tape. (You should be sawing through the tape.)

4. Draw your cut line using a straightedge along the tape according to the marks you made earlier.

5. Clamp a “guide” for your circular saw to the door. The inside edge of the guide should be placed at the same distance from the cut line as the distance between the saw blade and the edge of the saw’s base plate so that the guide guides you along the cut line. You should also probably use a guide that is as thick as or thicker than the base plate so that you don’t accidentally shift the circular saw over the guide while using it and veer off path from your cut line. I used a spare piece of wood about one-inch thick.

6. Make sure you know how to safely use your circular saw.

7. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris.

8. Cut the door with a circular saw.

9. Remove the tape.

10. Re-hang the door.
