Salkantay Trek, Day 2: Following the Rivers

The Plan

Red = Hike five hours from Colcampa to Playa Sahuayaca, a campsite on the Salkantay River

Blue = Take a bus from Playa Sahuayaca to Santa Teresa, a tiny village in the Santa Teresa Valley

Yellow = Hike for three hours along the Río Vilcanota from Santa Teresa to Aguas Caliente, the tourist town that is basically the lodging point for visitors to Machu Picchu.

And, we're off...

Along the Ridge

The camp we've left behind...

You can see how high up we are at times. (Look at the path with hikers below.)

Our guide teaches us about the history and ecosystem of the Santa Teresa Valley along the way.

Occasionally, we cross the river.

Entering the jungle...

Exiting the Jungle:

We arrive at Playa Sahuayaco, a camp on the Salkantay route.

We take a bus from Playa Sahuayaca to Santa Teresa (blue line)...

...Then, hike along the train tracks that run alongside the Río Vilcanota to Aguas Caliente, a.k.a Machu Picchu Town (yellow line above).

Our first glimpse of Machu Picchu!

Incan ruins along the way:

Reflections in the water:

Back on the tracks...

Juan, wishing he could thumb a ride...

Hello, train!

We're getting close...

We've arrived in Aguas Calientes! Tomorrow we get to see Machu Picchu!
