Huacachina

Huacachina is a tourist village surrounding an oasis in the Ica Desert of Peru. (An oasis is a fertile area that sustains life within a desert. Here, there is a lake.) We took a five-hour bus ride from Lima to Ica, and then a taxi from Ica to Huacachina.

Huacachina was cool. There were a lot of hostels and restaurants with young people, so we got to meet and talk to other people from other parts of the world. We went dune buggy riding and sandboarding down a desert mountain. Walking around the village at night was really nice, too.

Huacachina was also touristy. The only local people were those working at the restaurants and tour agencies. Everyone else was a traveler. Lodging was also expensive compared to other places in Peru. So, I guess whether or not you go here depends on your preferences as a traveler.
