Vieques #1: Getting There

Our Journey

After 3.5 days on the mainland, Ally and I made our way to Vieques, one of two small islands that belong to Puerto Rico off the main island's eastern coast.

To get there, you can charter a private plane for thousands of dollars, buy a commercial flight ticket for a few hundred dollars, or buy a one-way ferry ticket for $2. We chose to travel by ferry.

The ferry departs several times every day from a terminal in Ceiba, a port city on the eastern coast of the main island. To get there from San Juan, we had to take a taxi, which if I remember correctly took about one hour and cost around $100. The ferry trip is about one-hour and arrives at the ferry terminal in Isabel Segunda, which is the most populated "barrio" and administrative center of Vieques.

Oh, and the ferry trip is a bumpy ride. Plan on sitting down the whole time.

The Map: In this picture, you can see where Vieques is located, how its size compares to that of the main island, and the route that we took to get there.

How to Make Your Reservations

Here is the website where you can purchase your ferry tickets: https://www.puertoricoferry.co...

If you are looking to travel to Ceiba Ferry Terminal from San Juan, as we did and most tourists will do, there are a few different ways that you can organize your transport if you don't have your own vehicle:

  • Search "taxis in San Juan" in Google Maps and call the taxi companies who have the best reviews and are closest to where you are staying. (This is what I did. Another tip if you do this is to consider asking your driver if he/she would consider providing return transport from Ceiba to San Juan when you arrive back on the mainland.)
  • Search for current taxi fares on this website: https://www.taxifarefinder.com...
  • Use Uber. (This will likely be the easiest, but most expensive option.)
