Jardín de Mariposas, Museo Nacional

Museo Nacional

The national museum is a former military building-turned museum on Avenida Central in the center of San José that exists to showcase the culture, history, and environment of Costa Rica. One of the main exhibits is the butterfly garden, where you can see and learn about the 14 species of butterflies that live in Costa Rica.

Host Plants

Each species of butterfly has its own preferred host plant. A butterfly deposits its eggs on a host plant, where a few days later caterpillars are born. Caterpillars live on the host plant, which serves as a home and source of food. During this stage of their lives, caterpillars eat 20 times their own weight.

Look at the host plant below. You can see holes eaten out of it by a caterpillar.

La Casa de Capullos

Here are the materials that a caterpillar uses to build its cocoon: Silk expelled from its own mouth, leaf bits, chewed up wood, and its own feces.
