Sacred Valley Day Loop #2: Salinas de Maras

Next, we went to the Maras Salt Mines. The orange line from Chinchero to Maras on the map below shows our path.

At the Maras Salt Mines there are more than 6,000 salt ponds carved by the Incas that have been in operation for over 500 years. Today, they are still mined by local families. From here comes the famous Peruvian pink salt.

This article gives a really nice explanation of the salt mines, their history, their significance, and the method of mining: https://www.machutravelperu.com/blog/maras-salt-mines

Below, you can see the landscape of the Sacred Valley, or Urubambu Valley, where we were driving, followed by pictures of the salt mines site.
